Low-cost airlines such as Volaris, Interjet, and Viva Aerobus have cheap flights in Mexico that can often compete with long-distance buses on price if booked well in advance. Budget airlines are a fairly recent concept in Mexican skies but fortunately all Mexican airlines generally have good safety records. The safety records and fleet age of low-cost airlines Volaris and Interjet compare very well with traditional full-service airlines such as Aeroméxico, Aeroméxico Connect, and Aeromar.

Volaris (Y4) – Mexico’s Largest Low-Cost Airline

Volaris (Y4) is the second largest airline in Mexico serving 29 destinations including Los Angeles, Oakland, San Jose, and Chicago in the USA. (Volaris is awaiting permission to add 23 more routes from Mexican cities to US destinations.) Volaris uses Toluca Airport (TLC) as its main base but following the demise of Mexicana and Click has an increasing presence at Mexico City Airport (MEX) as well. Volaris has a code-share agreement with Southwest Airlines.

Volaris (Y4) has been flying since 2006 and is the largest of Mexico’s low cost airlines. Volaris has a fleet of 26 Airbus aircraft (24 Airbus A319s and 2 Airbus A320s) with an average age of just less than four years.
